Xavion Alford: Arizona State’s Defensive Star and 2026 NFL Draft Sleeper to Watch

When Xavion Alford transferred to Arizona State, few expected him to become the heart of a defense on the rise. Fast forward to 2025, and Alford is not only the vocal leader of the Sun Devils' secondary but also a key figure in a defense that's being heralded as the program's most dynamic in years.

Rising from Setbacks to Stardom

Alford’s journey to Tempe wasn’t a straight line. Originally a four-star recruit out of Shadow Creek High School in Texas, Alford started his collegiate career at the University of Texas before transferring to USC. Unfortunately, a season-ending injury in 2022 followed by eligibility complications in 2023 delayed his breakout. But adversity only sharpened his focus.

Finally able to take the field in 2024, Alford delivered a standout season. He recorded 85 total tackles (40 solo), five pass deflections, and two interceptions. Opposing quarterbacks rarely tested him, and for good reason: on 354 coverage snaps, he was targeted just 14 times. Of those, he allowed a mere seven receptions for 76 yards.

To put it in perspective, Alford’s 50% completion rate allowed was the second-best in the Big 12 and seventh-best nationally. His forced incompletion rate of 35.7% led all FBS defensive backs. These aren't just good numbers; they represent elite efficiency and a level of consistency that can't be ignored.

ASU’s Defense in 2025: A Unit Built to Surprise

With defensive coordinator Brian Ward entering his second season, ASU's defense is primed for a leap forward. Known for his aggressive, high-pressure schemes, Ward has crafted a defense that blends speed, versatility, and high football IQ—qualities that fit Alford like a glove.

The Sun Devils are returning key starters across the defensive line and linebacker corps, but it’s the secondary, with Alford as the captain, that will set the tone. Already named to the preseason All-Big 12 First Team, Alford is expected to be the "on-field coach," orchestrating coverage adjustments and keeping the unit disciplined against the pass-heavy offenses in the conference.

What makes this year's ASU defense so intriguing is its depth and adaptability. With Alford providing security over the top and in the box, Ward can afford to dial up more exotic blitz packages and disguise coverages, creating chaos for opposing offenses. Analysts have labeled ASU as a potential top-25 defense, and Alford’s presence is a big reason why.

Projected 2025 Stats for Xavion Alford

Looking ahead to 2025, Alford's role as a do-it-all safety will likely see him eclipse his 2024 numbers in several key areas. Here are realistic projections for his final season:

Statistic

2025 Projection

Total tackles

90-95

Interceptions

2-4

Pass breakups

5-8

Targets allowed

Under 20

Coverage grade

85+

Expect Alford's interception numbers to rise slightly due to his increased responsibilities in zone coverage schemes. His tackling numbers should remain steady, but with a slight uptick as ASU's defense forces offenses into more underneath routes, funneling plays toward the safeties.

NFL Draft Outlook: A Kamren Curl-Type with Rising Stock

Alford's skillset projects well to the NFL, particularly for teams employing Cover-3 and hybrid schemes. His anticipation, tackling technique, and football intelligence make him an ideal box safety who can also drop into shallow zones with ease.

A fitting NFL comparison is Kamren Curl of the Washington Commanders. Like Curl, Alford isn't the flashiest athlete in terms of straight-line speed, but he makes up for it with elite instincts, physicality, and consistency. Scouts have noted Alford's ability to read route concepts and react quickly, limiting yards after the catch and snuffing out screens and quick passes.

Physically, Alford's 6'1", 195-pound frame gives him the versatility to match up against tight ends and bigger slot receivers. His 40-yard dash is estimated in the 4.54-4.60 range, which isn't blazing but sufficient for a player whose game is predicated on anticipation and positioning.

As it stands, early draft boards peg Alford as a mid-round pick, likely in the 3rd to 4th round range of the 2026 NFL Draft. However, a strong 2025 campaign, especially if he can boost his turnover numbers, could push him into late Day 2 consideration. His leadership qualities and mental toughness also give him added value in NFL front offices looking for culture-setting players.

Legacy in Tempe and Beyond

Beyond statistics and draft projections, Alford's legacy at ASU is cementing itself in leadership and resilience. In a program seeking a defensive identity, he's become the rallying point for a unit that could surprise the nation.

If Arizona State does rise to national relevance this season, it will be in no small part due to the play and leadership of Xavion Alford. His journey from Texas to Tempe, battling through adversity to become a star, is the kind of story that resonates with fans and scouts alike.

2025 is set to be Alford's statement year. And if all goes to plan, it could catapult him into the NFL spotlight as one of the draft's most polished, pro-ready safeties.
