The NBA is facing its most serious gambling scandal since the Tim Donaghy era, as federal authorities announced multiple arrests today connected to two overlapping investigations illegal sports-betting operation and a Mafia-backed poker ring that allegedly involved current and former NBA personnel.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI, more than 30 arrests were made across 11 states, with charges ranging from wire fraud to money-laundering conspiracies. Among those reportedly named are Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, and former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Damon Jones.
The sports-betting probe centers on allegations that players shared confidential injury and availability information, and in some cases manipulated game participation to benefit specific player-prop bets. Meanwhile, the poker ring investigation reportedly uncovered the use of rigged tables, technology-assisted cheating, and the laundering of profits through organized criminal networks.
Both Rozier and Billups have been placed on administrative leave as the NBA launches its own internal review. League officials have declined public comment but are said to be coordinating closely with federal investigators.
This latest scandal follows the lifetime ban of Jontay Porter in 2024, when the former Toronto Raptors forward was found to have bet on NBA games and intentionally underperformed to affect prop outcomes. That case was handled internally by the league today’s developments, however, are criminal proceedings that could result in significant prison time.
The investigation highlights growing concerns over the intersection of legalized sports betting and professional sports integrity. League executives are now under increasing pressure to tighten prop-bet regulations and improve information security around player health and availability.
While details are still emerging, this moment marks a critical test for the NBA’s reputation and oversight in the gambling era. As indictments are unsealed and more names surface, the league’s next moves will determine how it responds to what may be the most damaging scandal in decades.
