Washington takes the win at Penn State

I attended #21 Washington at Penn State on Monday night. Heading in, it was an intriguing match up. This is the third meeting between the two schools.

Washington starts Jadon Bowton, Harry Bertos, Egor Akulov, Asher Hestad, Zach Ramsey, Alex Hall, Charlie Kosakoff, Richie Aman, Joe Dale, Cameron Cruz, and Connor Lofy.

Penn State starts Jonathan Evans, Ben Nash, Matthew Henderson, Joe Sheridan, Malick Daouda, Christian Daouda, Freddie Bell, Caden Grabfelder, Morgan Marshall, Davy Leavey, and Ben Liscum.

Penn State starts with the ball; Washington gets the ball to start the second half. Two minutes, Penn State gets the first chance of the game, but it just goes wide. Washington has had a few chances outside of the 18, but nothing comes of it. Washington’s Asher Hestad had a shot in front of the net, but he puts it wide.
Washington’s Joe Dale gets a great shot, but Penn State’s Jonathan Evans saves the ball and puts it out for a corner kick in the 9th minute. 13 minutes in, Washington has had multiple chances on net and controlled possession. Penn State had another good chance in the 19th minute, but once again, nothing comes of it.
Great passing gives Washington another chance in front of net, but it is saved by Penn State’s Evans. Richie Aman goes down in the 23rd minute and it will be a penalty kick for the Huskies. Washington’s Kosakoff takes the penalty kick, and it is saved by Jonathan Evans. The energy in the stadium was electric as that penalty was saved.
In the 26th minute, Joe Dale finds Connor Lofy, and he fires it at the back of the net, where Penn State’s Jonathan Evans could not reach it. Huskies take the lead halfway through the first half. Penn State’s Leavey crosses it into the box and Washington puts it out for a corner kick, the corner comes in, and Bowton catches it with ease.

In the 34th minute, Washington made it 2-0 thanks to Zach Ramsey, who nets his sixth goal of the season. A great pass from Charlie Kosakoff sets up Ramsey for a beautiful finish. With four minutes left in the first half, the referee heads to the monitor for a VAR review. The call is no handball, and the Huskies get a corner kick, nothing comes of it. Penn State has their best chance of the night so far as it is saved by Washington’s Bowton. Penn State gets a corner kick with under a minute left in the first half, saved by Bowton, a quick counterattack happened but Kosakoff put it above the goal. At the half, Washington has 12 shots with 6 shots on goal; Penn State has 2 shots with 0 shots on goal.
Second half begins with a Washington kickoff. Penn State is the first team to get a corner kick in the second 45. It is deflected by a Husky, and it is another corner kick. Penn State gets a header off the second corner kick, but it goes up and wide. In the 54th minute, Washington’s Zach Ramsey comes out of nowhere and gets an opportunity in front of the net but saved by Penn State’s Evans.
Washington’s Dale and Aman play some great soccer and get a chance in front of the net in the 56th minute but it is once again saved by Jonathan Evans. Once again, some great play by Washington’s Aman and Hall, the header by Hall was put just wide. In the 62nd minute, Connor Lofy picks up a yellow card. Minutes later, Asher Hestad also picks a yellow card. A few attempts on goal by Washington ends up with a goal kick for Penn State.
In the 68th minute, Penn State’s Joe Sheridan gets a yellow card. Washington’s Hall takes the free kick, and he hits it into the PSU wall. Washington gets their first corner kick of the second half in the 73rd minute, and they take it short, and it leads to great save by PSU’s Evans. In the 74th minute, Washington gets a free kick on the right wing, and it leads to a shot wide by the Huskies.

In the 76th minute, Penn State took a corner kick, and it was shot at the net, and it was blocked by Washington’s Cameron Cruz. That leads to VAR review. The result of the VAR review is a penalty kick for Penn State. Penn State’s Ben Liscum converts the penalty, and it is now 2-1 with 14 minutes remaining. Penn State’s chances in the 18-yard box are starting to pick up as the game nears its end. Penn State gets four corner kicks with under nine minutes remaining, nothing comes of those kicks.
Washington gets a corner kick with four minutes remaining. The Huskies take it short, leading to a shot saved by Penn State’s Evans. Penn State gets a very good attempt on net, but it just goes wide with under three minutes left. A counterattack leads to a Jonathan Evans save. A cross into the box is picked up by Washington’s Bowton to end the game. Washington ends their East Coast trip with a 2-1 win over Penn State in State College.
