Devils outlast Capitals in 3-2 shootout victory

The New Jersey Devils faced the Washington Capitals Thursday night and squeaked out a win and two points in the victory. Left winger Erik Haula once again shined in the 3-2 shootout win with a goal and four shots on goal. Center Dawson Mercer extended his point streak to 10 games. He notched a goal and an assist.


According to NHL stats, the Devils had four Swiss players on the ice in center Nico Hischer, defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, goaltender Akira Schmid and right winger Timo Meier. Schmid also notched his first shootout win in his NHL tenure. The Devils held the Capitals to 22 shots on goal, while New Jersey kept the pressure on goaltender Darcy Kuemper with 40 shots on goal.


With this win, the Devils trail the first place Carolina Hurricanes by four points with 18 games left in the 2022-23 NHL season. The Devils head to Montreal on Saturday to face the Canadiens with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
