Previewing the Miami Heat for the 2026–27 Season

The Miami Heat have been one of the biggest stories this offseason with the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Pat Riley finally went all in to get the team's next superstar, and they were able to outbid the Celtics. Outside of Giannis and Bam, the roster is weaker overall due to how much Miami had to give up to acquire Giannis. However, this team still has enough pieces to be very competitive in the East. Having the best coach in the NBA will also always put them in a good position to be successful.

The Roster

Point Guards: Davion Mitchell, Dru Smith, Tre Donaldson (Two-Way Contract)

Shooting Guards: Tim Hardaway Jr., Klay Thompson, Ryan Conwell

Small Forwards: Andrew Wiggins, Pelle Larsson, Simone Fontecchio, Myron Gardner

Power Forwards: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jović, Keshad Johnson (Two-Way Contract)

Centers: Bam Adebayo, Bobby Portis, Nick Richards, Vladislav Goldin (Two-Way Contract)

Like I stated, this is a weaker roster overall. It lacks depth but definitely has the top-end talent to be competitive. Miami also lacks a true point guard, although I could see that issue being addressed as the season goes on. The overall depth is a concern as well, and this team staying healthy will be vital to its success.

Biggest Questions

The biggest question I have for this team is the point guard position. Davion Mitchell has made his money in this league as a 3-and-D guard, not a pure point guard. This offense is going to look weird, at least to start the year. Now, being weird does not mean it won't be successful. With Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami will be able to score points, no question. However, this team is going to need to learn how to operate with a weak playmaking group early on. Dru Smith is more of a pure point guard, and he is definitely going to get an opportunity this season to establish himself. It will be interesting to see how the point guard rotation operates throughout the year.

The defensive ability of this team has some extreme upside, no question. Having two of the best defensive players in the league in Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo alone will make Miami stand out. Players like Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell, and Pelle Larsson are all very solid defenders as well. This could very well be the best defensive team in the league this season if everyone can stay on the court. They are going to need that defensive success due to some of the weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball.

The last question I have is whether Giannis can get back to being himself. These last couple of seasons have been a struggle for Giannis Antetokounmpo. He has regressed a little bit and has struggled with injuries. His usage for the Heat will be very high this season, and it will be interesting to see if he can get back into serious MVP contention with guys like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, and Nikola Jokić. I think it would be a success if Giannis could get back on the All-NBA First Team, stay healthy, and lead the Heat to a top-six seed in a very deep Eastern Conference.

Prediction Markets

Some of the current futures betting lines for the Heat are as follows:

  • Regular-season win total: 45.5

  • To win the NBA Finals: +3000 (11th-best odds)

  • To win the Eastern Conference: +950 (6th-best odds)

  • To reach the Conference Finals: +450 (7th-best odds)

  • To reach the Conference Semifinals: +160 (6th-best odds)

  • To win the division: +145 (Best odds)

  • To make the playoffs: -270

  • To miss the playoffs: +210

  • To participate in the Play-In: +170

  • To win the NBA Cup: +3500 (15th-best odds)

These odds are a little above average and project the Heat to be a playoff team somewhere around the 5–7 seed range. I don't think expectations are sky-high for Miami this season. They have very little depth and could use another offseason to really build this roster around Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

I think if Giannis can stay healthy and the Heat win a playoff series, that would be considered a successful season and would set the team up for major success in 2027–28. It will be interesting to see how this team competes in what might be the deepest Eastern Conference we have seen in over 20 years.

Final Prediction and Outlook

I think the Heat will certainly be a playoff team. With how competitive the East is this year, I honestly believe Miami could finish anywhere from the second to the eighth seed. I expect a solid regular season from this team, and I think they will surpass their projected win total. However, once the playoffs begin, it is extremely hard to predict what will happen due to the amount of talent in this conference.

I think Miami is still a year away from being a true championship contender, but the foundation is definitely there. Next season could be the year that the Heat really take off.

Final Prediction: 48–34 | 4th Seed | First-Round Exit
