Previewing the Brooklyn Nets for the 2026-27 Season

The Brooklyn Nets are in the process of a rebuild, and it really hasn't been the most promising so far. The team finished 20-62 last season and did not get the best lottery luck, which led them to select Mikel Brown Jr. with the sixth overall pick. The team also lost Nic Claxton this offseason in a trade that brought in Julius Randle. Randle will definitely be able to bring more to the offense, and I will say that Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle have a high ceiling together, but also a very low floor. It will be interesting to see how this team performs in a tough Eastern Conference.

The Roster

Point Guards: Nolan Traoré, Mikel Brown Jr., Ben Saraf

Shooting Guards: Egor Dëmin, Drake Powell, Terance Mann, Keon Ellis

Small Forwards: Michael Porter Jr., Josh Minott, Joshua Jefferson, Chaney Johnson (Two-Way Contract)

Power Forwards: Julius Randle, Danny Wolf, Grant Nelson (Two-Way Contract), Tyler Bilodeau (Two-Way Contract)

Centers: Day'Ron Sharpe, Moritz Wagner, Noah Clowney

The roster is somewhat similar to last season, as it is still filled with a lot of young players. The biggest change is losing longtime center Nic Claxton and adding Julius Randle. Randle had a tough end to his tenure in Minnesota but is looking to start fresh and bring the Nets back to relevance, like he did with the Knicks back in 2020. The majority of the team's success will depend on the younger players continuing to develop.

Biggest Questions

The first major question I have for this team is how good can the duo of Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle be? Porter had an excellent season last year, and now the Nets have added another proven scorer in Julius Randle. These are two guys who can put up big numbers offensively and could be a very underrated duo in the Eastern Conference. The biggest concern I have with these two is on the defensive side of the floor, as neither is known for being a great defender. If they can build some chemistry and both continue to produce offensively, this could be a very interesting duo to watch throughout the season.

Another question I have is can Egor Dëmin take another step in his second season? Dëmin showed some nice flashes during his rookie season and has the potential to be a very important piece for this team going forward. The Nets have a lot of young talent on this roster, but Dëmin is definitely one of the more intriguing players they have. I think his development as a scorer and playmaker will be a major thing to watch this season. If he can become more consistent and take another step, Brooklyn could have a very solid young guard to build around for the future.

The last question I have is which young players will emerge as major pieces for this team going forward? The Nets have a ton of young talent with guys like Mikel Brown Jr., Nolan Traoré, Ben Saraf, Drake Powell, and Danny Wolf. Obviously, not all of these guys are going to get major minutes throughout the season, so it will be interesting to see who can separate themselves from the rest. Brooklyn is still in a position where developing these younger players should be one of the biggest priorities for the organization. I think there is definitely some talent here, and if a couple of these guys can have breakout seasons, the Nets could be in a much better position going forward.

Prediction Markets

Regular Season Win Total: 24.5

To Win the NBA Finals: +10000 (Tied for Worst Odds)

To Win the Eastern Conference: +50000 (Worst Odds)

To Reach the Conference Finals: +25000 (Worst Odds)

To Reach the Conference Semifinals: +12000 (Worst Odds)

To Win the Division: +50000 (Worst Odds)

To Make the Playoffs: +2200

To Miss the Playoffs: -6000

To Participate in the Play-In Tournament: +1100

To Win the NBA Cup: +80000 (29th Best Odds)

These odds are at the bottom of the league. They suggest the Nets will finish as the 15th seed in the Eastern Conference and won't be a competitive team. It is hard to see them being competitive due to the Eastern Conference being so balanced and talented, along with Brooklyn still lacking overall talent. We will see if they can change the narrative this season.

Final Prediction and Outlook

Like most people, I am not a major believer in the Nets this season. I think they have a nice core of young players to build around, but I am not a fan of the Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. duo that will headline this team. I think the organization is in a tough spot, and general manager Sean Marks could be on the hot seat. The team could potentially part ways with him after this season if things don't improve. Overall, I think the Nets are still far away from becoming a competitive team in the NBA.

Final Prediction: 23-59 | 15th Seed
