Ohio State fires Chris Holtmann in the middle of his seventh season as the Buckeyes head coach. Holtmann held a 137-87 record during his tenure at Ohio State. He never made it to the second weekend of the tournament and ended his career at Ohio State, going 30-30 in his last two seasons. He went 2-9 in his last 11 games, and most fans felt it was time to go. The tendency to collapse in the second half and games in which Ohio State had a 10-point lead in the second half and lost.
Ohio State has had a rough two years in hoops, and without the Miracle Run in the Big Ten tournament last season and some big-time recruits, it would have been a complete disaster. This team has too much talent and upside to be 14-11 and 4-10 in Big Ten conference play. The move had to be done and was a must-need move. Ohio State announced associate head coach Jake Diebler will serve as the interim coach for the rest of the 2023–24 season. His debut is on February 18th at home against 2nd-ranked Purdue. Ohio State still owes Chris Holtmann 12.8 million from his current contract.
OSU athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. "He and his wife, Lori, are wonderful people. I thank each of them for their seven years here in Columbus and I wish them well."
All love to Chris Holtmann from Ohio State and as a buckeye fan I thank him for the last 7 years of hoops. #GOBUCKS
