Oxford, Miss. -- - It’s the first Tuesday of the regular season. Following a three game sweep of Charleston Southern over the weekend, Ole Miss will welcome Arkansas State to Swayze Field this evening in the first midweek contest of the campaign. The Red Wolves are a familiar foe, having faced off with the Rebels at least once for 27 consecutive seasons.
The Red Wolves come into this matchup at 0-3 on the young season after being swept by Samford on opening weekend. Arkansas State managed just 12 total runs over the weekend, while allowing 31. The projected starter for the Red Wolves against Ole Miss is LHP Walker Williams. Williams pitched one inning over the weekend, facing five batters and allowing two hits, 3 earned runs including a home run and issuing a walk. The key offensive weapon to keep an eye on for Arkansas State is Jacob Hager. In 10 at bats over the weekend, he had six hits, a home run, two RBI, and nine total bases.
As for the Rebels, they come into this matchup 3-0 and have moved up to #3 in the D1 Baseball rankings. Ole Miss scored 32 runs over the weekend in the sweep of the Bucs, including two run rule victories. The pitching staff allowed just six runs and only gave up 13 hits for the entire weekend. RHP Jack Washburn, the transfer from Oregon State, will get his first start of the season. Washburn pitched one inning over the weekend, allowing one walk and striking out one in the three batters he faced. He did not allow a hit.
The current start time for the contest is scheduled for 4:00 central time barring any changes due to weather. No changes have been announced at the time of this preview.
