Fall camp has started and as promised here is my projected starters and depth chart for the upcoming season. Some positions are already locked down and some that are up for grabs.
At QB, we have two QBs that are in the battle for the starting spot. Tommy Ulatowski, who shared the starting role last year is back. Devin Kargman has some starting experience and is also in the battle for the starting job. If you want the guy that has the starting experience and chemistry, Ulatowski will start. If you want the physical talent, you want Kargman. I’m going with Kargman.
We know who is going to play and start for the running backs and receivers. Gavin Garcia and Ky Thomas will be 1a and 1b. Chrishon McCray and Luke Floriea are starting as well. That third receiver spot is a mystery. That spot will go to a lengthy receiver. I believe that it will be a battle between Stanley King, Ardell Banks and Sebastian Brown. I’m going with Sebastian Brown for that starting spot. But we will see a rotation of those guys at the beginning of the season. Also Tight end position is very unknown at this time. We have a lot of transfers and inexperienced guys. It's a battle between two transfers, Connor Muldowney and Hunter Hopperton. Give me Connor Muldowney for the starting spot.
As for the lineman, we have a lot of young guys that have starting experience and some transfers with starting experience, which is a good issue to have. Cam Golden and Jimto Obidegwu are you starting tackles, both starting last year. Tony Georges transfers in from TSDTR, he will be starting on the interior, most likely center. Dustyn Morell is back and will start at guard. The other guard spot I believe will be between Nikolai Bujnowski and Chris Farrell.
We move onto the other side of the ball. The defensive line brings back some starters, Stephen Daley, Matt Harmon and Oliver Billotte. That nose tackle is up for grabs as CJ West has transferred to Indiana. In this prediction, I’ll go with a veteran transfer, Lavell Gibson. Linebackers is where it gets fun to predict. You have a trusted veteran, Khalib Johns, coming back after missing games last year due to injury, Rocco Nicholl has had a great spring, Nicholas Giacolone is a guy that started last year and lastly transfer Mason Woods, has been balling. I predict Johns, Nicholl and Woods to start but it'll be a rotation to start the season.
Secondary there's depth but some unknown still. Alex Branch returns to Kent, he’ll start at a safety spot. That other safety spot I believe will be Josh Baka, who has been a great reserve over the past couple years. If the defense plays a third safety, that’ll be between Malcolm Folk and Jaylen Dotson. Cornerbacks, we bring in transfer Dallas Branch, he has starting experience and was a Mountain West Honorable Mention in 2022. That other spot in my prediction goes to Xavier Cokley, he played in a couple games last season.
Lastly, I couldn’t forget the special teams guys! Gus Goodell is back and will long snap this year. Punter Josh Smith is back after being a starting punter for the past couple of years. Lastly, Andrew Glass is back, who has the chance to become Kent State’s leader in all time points.
