Cal Addresses Huge Need with Recent OT Commitment

Offensive Line Problems Could be Addressed

Yesterday was a great day to be a Golden Bear. One of the biggest needs for Cal this year was putting together a solid offensive line. Last year they grew stronger as a squad as the season went on, especially in the running game, but the passing game left a lot to be desired. As the portal takes away, the portal also gives. In came a Graduate Transfer from Arizona State Spencer Lovell to provide more depth and experience to a line that needs to be challenged.

A Little About Lovell

From the class of 2018, Lovell is initially from Fort Collins, CO. The 6'7 315 pounds mammoth size of a human, initially committed to the Colorado State then switched his commitment to Arizona State. He was a 3-star and the 95th Offensive Guard in the country coming out of high school. Lovell played in 11 games last year but did not start. Reports confirmed that he ended up winning the starting position this year for Arizona State but decided to enter the transfer portal anyways. Lovell has 2 years of eligibility left giving Cal more stability on the O-Line.

What Lovell Brings to the Table

Lovell has experience playing against Pac-12 competition and practicing against it every day. This is a huge plus as he will be able to come in and know what the expectations are in Pac-12 play. Though we do not know if he is coming in as a starter or not, we do know he provides valuable depth to an O-Line group that needs more bodies. I expect him to compete come fall for the Offensive Tackle position as his size along with his talent is hard to ignore, especially in goal-line situations.
