Clemson, S.C. – Behind a strong start from Michael Sharman and clutch hitting from Jacob Jarrell and Co., the undefeated Clemson Tigers Baseball held off the Bryant Bulldogs 5-3 on Friday afternoon in Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Sharman, in five innings of work, allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out five to earn the win. Hayden Simmerson and Danny Nelson allowed 3 hits, two earned runs, and two walks while striking out six baLers in four innings of relief pitching.
Clemson struck quickly in the first inning, using singles from Jarren Purify and Nate Savoie to set the table before Luke Gaffney delivered a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead early. Jarrell added to the lead with a two-run homer of his own, giving the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs answered in the fourth when Charlie Saul singled home Ellis Garcia to cut into the deficit. Clemson responded almost immediately as Purify doubled and later scored on a Ty Dalley RBI single, to extend the lead to 5-1.
Bryant mounted a late push. Garcia tripled in the eighth inning to bring Bryant within two, but Nelson proved to be the kryptonite as he struck Saul out to halt the rally.
Purify led the Tigers offensively with three hits and two runs scored, while Dalley added two hits and an RBI. Jarrell’s home run accounted for two of Clemson’s five runs. Garcia paced Bryant with a triple and two runs batted in.
First pitch was thrown at 2:01 p.m. at a nice 61 degrees. Clemson closed out the game in the ninth inning to secure the 5-3 victory and a 6-0 record so far this season. The Tigers locked up the series with the win today.
